Switzerland to announce new Air Force fighter on June 30

Airbus would have proposed to assemble all Eurofighter Typhoons in Switzerland if it wins. Rafale, F-35 and Super Hornet are also in competition

The Swiss government is expected to announce the winning bid in the competition that will choose the new Air Force fighter on Wednesday, June 30th.

The nearly $6.5 billion contract is disputed by four companies, Dassault (Rafale fighter), Boeing (F/A-18E/F Super Hornet), Lockheed Martin (F-35) and Airbus, with the Eurofighter Typhoon.

The European aerospace giant has proposed to assemble all the aircraft on Swiss soil, a newspaper source said on Sunday.

The Eurofighter program has as partners Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, countries that would have offered political cooperation with Switzerland.

The Air Force order from the neutral country has been one of the most disputed in recent years. Switzerland has 30 F/A-18C/D fighters in addition to 35 very old F-5E/F light fighters.

The requirement, which was approved by the population in a referendum, does not stipulate an exact amount of fighter jets, but the best offer within the closed price of 6 billion Swiss francs.

In early June, a Swiss newspaper named the Dassault Rafale as the favourite, but last week Swiss radio said the F-35, the only 5th-generation fighter in the competition, had been the best rated by the government.

Despite this, analysts are unanimous in saying that the decision will have great political weight, hence the pressure for broader agreements, which involve interests in areas such as economics, energy, science and the environment.

The first fighters in the Swiss program will be delivered in 2025.
