Lufthansa has confirmed the arrival of its first five Boeing 787-9 jets in 2022. The new widebody aircraft will debut on the route between Frankfurt and Toronto, as the German carrier had already revealed.
Lufthansa’s first Dreamliner will receive the D-ABPA registration, the company said on Wednesday. The jet will be named after Germany’s capital, Berlin.
Until recently, it was believed that the first 787 would be delivered in late 2021. Lufthansa has expanded its order for the Boeing jet, taking advantage of five aircraft that have already been completed but that had their order cancelled by other customer.
The US planemaker, however, is experiencing problems related to aircraft production and therefore deliveries are delayed.
“The ultra-modern long-haul aircraft consumes on average only 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger and 100 kilometers flown. That is around 30 percent less than the predecessor aircraft. The CO2 emissions are also greatly improved,” said a Lufthansa statement.
The airline maintains a tradition of naming its planes with the name of the famous city. The first jet to receive the nickname “Berlin” was a Boeing 707 in the 1960s.
Recently, the Airbus A380 D-AIMI also honored Berlin. The aircraft, however, was taken out of service in 2020 and is currently stored in France.
