EGO Airways may replace the Embraer E190 with the SSJ100

Italian airline returned its only aircraft to German lessor and plans to have two Sukhoi jets in 2022

Created in 2020, carrier EGO Airways had plans to put into operation a network of flights in Italy last year. With only one Embraer E190 regional jet leased, the company ended up making few flights.

In December, EGO had to return its only plane to the German lessor after the contract was terminated. Now, the airline is trying to make a new start with Sukhoi SuperJet 100 jets.

According to the Russian website Aviation21, EGO Airways is negotiating with SuperJet International, the company responsible for the aircraft, the lease of two SSJ100s.

SuperJet has an office in Venice, Italy, which in theory would facilitate the negotiation for the SSJ100 to return to an airline fleet in Europe.

Adria intended to lease 15 SSJ100 in 2019 (SSJ)

Early in its commercial career, the Sukhoi regional jet was operated by CitiJet, which operated flights for Brussels Airlines. But the aircraft’s ongoing operational problems made its use unfeasible. The aircraft was also negotiated with Adria Airways, but the company ended its activities in 2019.

EGO Airways obtained the AOC from the Italian government in November 2020, debuting its first flight in December between Naples and Amsterdam.

During the spring-summer season, the carrier served 11 regular destinations, but the single E190 was not sufficient to maintain reliable operation.
