ATR takes a step towards sustainability with the new PW127XT engine

Manufacturer of the most popular passenger turboprop will now adopt Pratt & Whitney Canada’s new series and has already announced its first customer, Air Corsica

If Airbus and Boeing shared the main spotlight at the Dubai Airshow, ATR was not far behind. The Italian-French manufacturer announced important orders, but it was a technical novelty that marked its participation in the event, the adoption of the PW127XT engine in its aircraft.

Developed by Pratt & Whitney Canada, the new series features an increased capacity low-pressure compressor, a new high-pressure turbine module, enhanced efficiency power turbine module, and a new gas-generator case with an improved oil distribution system.

This means an engine capable of consuming 3% less fuel, remaining installed in the wings 40% longer and thus reducing maintenance costs by 20%.

Pratt & Whitney also claims that the new engine is capable of running on up to 50% sustainable jet fuel.

The PW127XT is expected to be certified in Q2 2022, but it already has one customer, Air Corsica. The French airline has signed an agreement with ATR to receive five ATR 72-600 turboprops equipped with the new engine.

It is also worth mentioning that Pratt & Whitney will offer retrofitting old engines to the new standard from 2023 onwards.
